Formal requirements

- Applicants require an above-average Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or equivalent degree in  Agricultural, Environmental or Nutrition Sciences, Food Technology, Biology or a related discipline following at least three years of university studies or German Fachhochschule (university of apllied sciences) studies.

- Apart from grades and educational achievements, professional experience, motivation and other relevant activities will be considered.

- Proof of English language skills (e.g. 79 ibt TOEFL)

Contents
One of this century's major challenges is to intensify food production in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable manner. The concept of sustainability also includes the recycling of waste. Complex problems particularly arise on the periphery of densely populated areas where competing forms of land use must be balanced (e.g. settlement, recreation, waste disposal). In our attempts to handle these problems we not only have to consider scientific and technical aspects but also socio-economic, political and legal ones.

To this end, the University of Hohenheim has developed the Master’s programme 'Environmental Protection and Agricultural Food Production'. It is designed to provide qualified people of all nationalities with internationally competitive, state-of-the-art training.

Modules
1 + 2 Sem.: 6 compulsory Modules
                   - Economics and Environmental Policy
                   - Ecotoxicology and Environmental Analytics
                   - Environmental Microbiology, Parasitology and Microbial Ecology
                   - Environmental Science Project
                   - Matter Cycling in Agro-Ecosystems
                   - Spatial Data Analysis with GIS

                   1 compulsory module depending on the Student's educational
                   background 
                   - Agricultural Production and Residues or
                   - Food Technology and Residues

                    - 3 semi-elective modules

Objectives
Graduates will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to:

- analyze and understand ecosystematical, economic, political and administrative interdependencies

- independently acquire knowledge about  physical, chemical and biological properties of agents and matter in order to identify their effects and fate in the environment

- set up models for  environmental systems, conduct simulations and analyze the results

- analyze spatial data with geographical information systems

- develop integrative problem solutions on a global scale which also consider the aspect of global justice


Career Perspectives
Students will acquire strategic and methodological expertise, in order to successfully cope with the constantly changing requirements posed by social developments worldwide. The programme offers students the chance to build their personal strengths by selecting profile-enhancing special subjects. Graduates will be qualified to work as:

- Executives in environmental and quality management
- Agricultural and environmental consulting agencies
- Various environmental fields for enterprises and administrations
- Consultants and experts in various fields
- Research and development departments of international companies and organisations
- Academic institutions (research and teaching)

The M.Sc. degree qualifies graduates to commence doctoral research.
